A Brief History of Salt Rock...
The story of Salt Rock is closely linked to the famous Hulett family (namely Sir Liege Hulett) who
went on to become the largest single cane grower in Kwazulu Natal. Basil Hulett had three sons, one of which being Ralph Hulett (a passionate game fisherman). The family went on to plan what would become the Salt Rock Hotel close to Granny's Pool on their coastal farm land. The Salt Rock hotel was built with 32 rooms and the quality of their workmanship can still be seen today by taking a walk around the Salt Rock Hotel which is still a very popular wedding venue offering beach weddings. In the early days Basil worked on the development of a small residential area that later became the birth of present day Salt Rock village.
He gained permission to build a tidal pool along with fishing towers on the rocks that lay below the Salt Rock hotel. They adapted the rock pool to allow holiday makers to swim in safety using rope support systems. The Salt Rock Hotel became a huge success and enjoyed a high standard of clientele who could enjoy the beach, tidal pool, fishing and of course the dance band that played in the evening. With Ralph's intervention Salt Rock became a popular fishing destination perfect for catching garrick, salmon, stumpies and shad. Ralph Hulett's skill and passion for fishing was rewarded when he broke the All Africa Record in 1960 for the Black Marlin he landed off of Paradise Island in Mozambique. The Salt Rock Hotel walls are lined with pictures of his epic adventure. The Salt Rock Hotel is still a popular venue for locals to enjoy the old character and atmosphere of the old North Coast before the advent of developers in the Ballito
North Coast area.
There are plenty of fishing spots along the coast from Salt Rock, through Chakas Rock to Ballito and Salmon bay. Salt Rock owes much of its history to Basil Hulett and his wife Gwen who started not only the Salt Rock Hotel but went on to develop the town of Salt Rock that is found today. Salt Rock village and Chakas Rock have kept the same atmosphere and culture of a small town beach retreat on the North Coast. Ballito's growth has been very beneficial to business but in many ways it has lost its old charm. There is plenty of alternative places to stay in Salt Rock consisting of bed and breakfast accommodation, guest house accommodation and self catering accommodation. Sundance Salt Rock Bed and Breakfast Ballito North Coast is 300 metres from the Salt Rock Beach and 5 mins drive from Ballito Main Beach.
